{Birthday} Invitations!!

So I decided to splurge on the birthday party invitations for the kids this year ~ mainly because it's Baby K's 1st birthday and so wanted it to be special.  And what you do for one child, you must do for the other, so even though age 4 isn't a milestone birthday, I had to take the plunge for A Train's birthday party, too!

As they both have birthdays in March, I did toss around the idea of having a joint party, but ultimately decided to do them separately {again, mainly because it's Baby K's 1st, so wanted it to be special}.  So, of course, that doesn't help trying to be cost-effective since I'm paying for 2 parties at once {insert sigh here}. BUT.  It is what it is....AND I'm happy to report I'm pretty excited about how the invites turned out!!

I had my graphic designer friend, Christy {of CH Design Studio}, create them for me.  The images below show the front and back side of them....spectacular, aren't they?  I wish I could have totally customized birthday {along with baby showers, house-warming, Christmas, etcetera!} invitations for the kiddos every year, but I don't think that will be happening, just due to the cost of creating & printing things like these.  Next year is Evite! Ha!!

{Nova Nature} Review & GIVEAWAY!

Babies love to chew on things.  Anything.  Everything. And I often find myself wondering, "Wait.  I know she is really enjoying chewing on this thing.  But what if it has lead paint in it?"  when our little one digs her teeth into a plasticky toy.  It's the Mom in each of us.  It's natural for us to think this way...and worry this way.  I think it's part of every Mom's middle name: "Jane Worry-Wart-Mom Doe." Are you with me here???

Nova Nature has a great solution for us {at least regarding this one aspect of our many worries - ha!}!  Nova Nature carries ONLY eco-friendly, non-toxic, natural teethers and gifts ~ namely, rubber toys & teethers and 3D wooden puzzles.

We received 4 of their Natural Rubber Toys recently ~ the duck, frog, seahorse {so cute!} and dolphin.  And, first of all, I must say I love the packaging.  The toys come in simple, recyclable and perfectly cute little boxes.  The image of the toy is on the outside of the box, along with a description of the toy and its eco-friendly & safe {that is, BPA-free, PVC-free and phthalate-free} qualities.

Now, when you feel the toys, they feel different from other plastic toys you've felt.  Their texture is softer, more pliable and thinner.  Sounds perfect for chewing on, right?  At least, that's what I thought of...oh, and so did our 10-month old. :) Here's what I found out about why they are so different: Nova Nature's rubber toys are constructed from the milk or sap of the common rubber tree known as the Hevea brasiliensis, which is harvest withOUT the use of herbicides and is readily biodegradable.  Perfect!

They also squeak when you squish them, which is always a nice surprise for little ones!  Our 10 month old can actually easily get them to squeak {since they are so soft & pliable}, unlike many other squeakable but hard plastic toys we have.  Oh, and if your older kids get a hold of these and throw them at something {or someone...c'mon, we all know this happens!}, these are so soft, they won't hurt.  With our nearly 4-year old, we play "catch" with them - Bonus!

My favorite of the four we received is the seahorse just because he's so darn cute and different.  I mean, you'll find tons of rubber ducks and frogs around, but how often do you find a seahorse, you know?  Mr. Seahorse also has more texture to him, which I like.  Baby K also grabbed this one first.  She definitely prefers the seahorse and duck over the other 2 we got {I'm thinking she has a thing for yellow}.  So, when choosing one, it might be wise to go brighter...or perhaps just pick what color your little one likes best.  Ultimately, you can't go wrong with any of the choices, though, so don't sweat it!

BUY IT!  Visit Nova Nature today to purchase your own eco-friendly, safe toy for your wee one!  They've got oodles {yes, I made that up} of fun animals to choose from, not to mention great teethers and 3D wooden puzzles for the older kiddos.

WIN IT!  FOUR lucky winners are going to win one of Nova Nature's rubber toys!  See below for how you can enter for your chance to win either the duck, frog, seahorse or dolphin!

{Teacher} Valentine Gifts

Okay, ladies, just one week until D-Day...oops, I mean V-Day! {Ha! Freudian slip there!}  Well, maybe you're more organized than me and have all you need to do done already...not me, though.  Yikes!  Okay, actually I am a pretty organized person.  But what happened is, being new to the "Teacher Gifts" world {we're still in our son's first year of school}, I totally overlooked getting a Valentine for my son's teacher.  And, only come to find out yesterday, they're celebrating Valentine's Day early at his school ~ as in, in tomorrow!!!  Eeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!

So, I did as anyone in my position would do:  I went perusing the web for some good ideas for teachers.  And, so sorry to all you alleged helpful sites on finding-a-valentine-for-your-teacher, but I came up with a big. fat. goose egg!  No heart-shaped box of chocolates or mug or coffee is going to do here, people!!   Sooo...I started thinking...and here is what I came up with for what we will be doing TODAY to get things done for his teacher!  The gift is 3-fold: home-made fudge, hand-crafted ivory flower pins/brooches & a hand-made card.  And here are the details:

image of final gift ready to go to his teacher!

Easy Coconut Fudge
Everyone loves something home-made.  Especially when it comes to food ~ let's be honest, nothing compares.  So I decided I had to do something delicious.  But it had to be easy.  C'mon now, I have EXTREMELY short notice here!  The basis to the recipe is from my beloved allrecipes.com, but I did tweak it a bit:

31/2 cups chocolate chips {use what you like here: dark, semi-sweet or milk}
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/4 cup butter
nuts {optional}
1/2 cup dried, flaked coconut {optional}

Just put it all together in a big bowl and microwave about 3-5 minutes in the microwave, stirring it and checking on it a couple times during that timeframe.  You want it melted but not boiling, or you'll get crystallized {not creamy & smooth} fudge.  OR you can use a double boiler like I did to reduce the risk of burning it.  I actually don't have a double boiler, so I just took a large glass bowl that fit above one of my pots.  I filled the pot with water and waited for it to boil.  Then I placed my bowl over the pot and stirred pretty much constantly until it was all melted together.

Now you can add the chopped up nuts and/or coconut here if you like.  I decided to add just the coconut to go for a "Mounds" feel.  If you add the nuts, too, though, you'll have more of an "Almond Joy" fudge! Yuummm!! {I decided to forgo the nuts, as my son's preschool is a peanut-free school}.

Pour it into a well-greased 8x8 pan {OR I recommend using some tin foil that's been well greased in the pan, to make pulling out the fudge easy for cutting!} and refrigerate an hour or so.  DONE!

After it was well chilled, I cut them into itsy bitsy squares {these guys are RICH!} using my pizza cutter {to get as straight of lines as possible!}.  Then I put them individually in little 3x4 treat bags {from the cake section at Wal-Mart}, and tied them closed with some cute valentine ribbon and scallop-punched tags that I also hole-punched for the ribbon to go through.  I then just my son's name and his teacher's name on them.

the fudge squares all wrapped up!

Creamy Flower Pins/Brooch
I recently added these to my shop, and absolutely adore them!  I don't offer them as pins/brooches in the shop yet, but probably will some time soon {right now, we offer them on headbands only}.  I love that you can add these for a pop to anything~ from your clothing to your purse and more!  Plus, you can mix and match sizes & colors for ultimate customization.  {LOVE.}

UPDATE: You may now purchase both/either the Fabric Flower Brooch OR Tutorial to do it yourself in our shop!  Visit Adam's Blankie to purchase either!! Thanks!!

the flower brooches on a card to give the teacher

here's an example of what the flower brooch look like on
Hand-made Cards
We first used some of the same butterfly scrapbook paper I used earlier for the tags and free-handed the letters, "L," "V," and "E" on it.  Since this was coming from a child, we wanted the letters to be hand-drawn and cut...but if you're just too much of a perfectionist, this is where your Cricut machine or stencils will come into play {or just search the internet for some letters to print, cut and trace onto paper}.  We used a couple of little felt flowers for the "O"  {little silk ones would also work just as well}, or anything you can find around your house shaped like an "O" for that matter!  Knowing I was going to turn this into a tic-tac-toe board, I then placed the letters on the card in places where the square would be.  Once I knew how they'd fit, I just used a ruler to make my grid/tic-tac-toe board.  We used glue dots to put our letters in place {or just use regular craft or Elmer's glue}, and then, with a peach-colored Sharpie marker, filled out the rest of the spaces with "X's" and "O's."  Get it?  Double meaning here - "X's" and "O's" for tic-tac-toe AND for "hugs and kisses!"  {LOVE it!!!}  To embellish it a bit more, I used my chalk ink {if you don't this stuff on hand, I'd highly recommend getting some from your local Michael's or Joann's. I'm not even a scrapbooker, and I find that the basic scrapbooking tools come in hand for many things other than scrapbooking!!} around the front edges of the card to add some depth and a vintage feel.  I used red first, and then muted and toned it down with my cloud white.  Then I just had my son color, stamp & sticker whatever he wanted on the other side of the card, which he loves, and I'm sure will be the favorite part for his teacher, too.

front of card

Then I remembered....there's a teacher aide in his class {insert gasp here!}.  Sooooooooo...are you supposed to give aides a valentine, too?  I would imagine so... So then we added the card imaged below.  I just used the same butterfly scrapbook paper and cut out two hearts, one bigger than the other. The big one represents the teacher, and the second smaller one, my little guy.  I added some scrolly leaves & branches to make them look like little growing flower hearts.  Then I added some of the same chalk ink around the edges of the hearts to add dimension and give it that same vintage-feel.  I actually think I like this one better...probably because it's a bit more whimsical, which is more my style....what about you?  Which one do you prefer?  {Oh, and in case, you're wondering, yes, the teacher aide, too, will also be getting some of the fudge we made!} :)

back sides of cards my son decorated himself
end result of everything going to the teachers!
 For the packaging, I used some brown paper Kraft bags, cut 2 slits at the top and threaded some ribbon through it.  Then I added another scalloped tag with the teacher's name on the front and my son's name on the back and tied it in a little bow.

Well, we sure hope the teachers both loves their gifts!  But, I have to ask, what do YOU give to your kids' teacher/s for Valentine's Day??  If you have any great craft ideas out there, please share on this thread!

{Trumpettes} for TODDLERS!

For Christmas, our baby girl got some Trumpette socks from her beloved Uncle and Aunt.  Only thing was they were too small.  I know you all just have to know Trumpette, right?  Right. So we were bummed, but figured we'd just go exchange them at the store....

Well, first off, not too many stores carry the Trumpette brand.  Furthermore, where they do carry them, they're only in the infant size.  But, here's what we found out.  Did you know Trumpettes are also made to fit 1 and 2 year-olds!??  {Big smile here!} AND, they have an even cuter {I know, hard to imagine, right!?} sock for toddlers?  Seriously. It's called the "Lucy."  They're utterly adorable with their little satin bows on the toes.  I'm hoping these fit Baby K for more than a year {that is, if they don't wear out before then!}

Kids' Bathroom {Makeover}

About a year ago I posted about wanting to redo our kids' bathroom.  Well, I finally got around to it! {Yay!}  The bathroom before was a bit dark {a deep maroon with gold accents}, and not very "cheery" for kids, although I personally loved it. SO, my big task was making it brighter and more kid-friendly, but NOT too "kid-themed," if you know what I mean.

So, after much thought and research, I decided to go with a watered-down {no pun intended here!} beach theme.  It's a bit mundane & hackneyed, I know, but it's what I came up with...  When you live in the desert, sometimes you just crave the beach!  So, there you have it.

So the first thing I did was pick out a color scheme.  I came up with aqua, coral, chocolate brown and white.  Next, I selected some aqua paint.  Ahhhhh...water inspiration!   Plus, it's fun, bright and modern ~ just what I was going for here {that, and I have an obsession lately with aqua}!!  I also purchased basic white towels and picked out some fabric to sew panels onto them.  The fabric is from Amy Butler {one of my all-time favorite fabric designers!}, and has the white, coral & chocolate colors I wanted. {The towels were not up on the towel bar for the pictures unfortunately, but you can see them here on the left}. To coordinate with them, I made some little washcloths {see below ~ last picture} with fabric and minky backing.  I chose not to use the same Amy Butler fabric for them, as it was a designer weight fabric and not as comfortable to be scrubbing the skin with!

We also picked out a new rug and shower curtain, and changed out our chrome bathroom accessories for brushed nickel.  {Oh, and on a sidenote here, now, of course, I want to redo ALL the accessories in our house! Ha!! Isn't that the way it goes?}

I found 3 starfish to hang on the walls {I just used mounting tape cut into little pieces}, along with some fake "coral" to set next to the sink {from Home Goods}, and a gorgeous sea print.  The print & starfish are from Etsy. {Have I told you lately how much I adore Etsy!} :)

gorgeous print from shop on Etsy - this photo doesn't do it justice unfortunately
our {fake} coral from Home Goods

Seashells collected by our little guy from his first time at the beach a couple years ago! {Awwww!}
I'm SO bummed I don't have the "before" pictures, but at least you can see the "after" ones.  I think I achieved what I was going for here..something the kids like, but that still is not total kid-infused.  AND something that feels beachy but is not all-inclusively and/or overly beach-themed.  What do you think?

Now I'm just waiting on a custom coral-colored wire seahorse {gotta get a bit more coral in there!} from my friend's shop, L'alfabeto.  She's got a fabulous shop with custom wire-made items, so be sure to check her out!!

Organizing the Craft Room {Oh, the horrors!!}

Lately I've had this annoying little bee in my bonnet {as my husband often touts!} about getting my craft/sewing room organized.  Ugh.  The horrors!  Sooo many small things, I cannot even begin to tell you!  From fabric and buttons to lacey trims and fringe to envelopes, bubble wrap & tape {and then some!!}, the list of things goes on and on in my humble little office! So, of course, I've been poring over the internet in search of organizational pieces....and I've found some!  BUT.  Man oh man, does a lot of it cost a pretty penny!  I'm going to share with you some of the gems I found...but I'm BEGGING YOU ~ please, oh please, if you are a crafter or organized person, could you do me a little favor?  Could you pleeeeeeeeeease offer up where you've found some organizational pieces {furniture, accessories, etcetera}, or even give instructions {tutorials} on how to make some you yourself have created!!??  If so, I'd LOVE it!!! Love, love, LOVE it!!  Also, while we're on the topic, I'd like to find a really tall, slim basket for organizing purposes....any tips for where to get some good deals on baskets??
